Morning Watch

Giles loved watching him sleep; it was the only moment Xander was ever completely still. It was early morning, and Giles was already dressed and showered, and he would have to leave to open the store in just a few minutes, but he wouldn't go a moment earlier than absolutely necessary. He never tired of it, this feeling he had every morning when he woke up with Xander at his side.

Xander shifted on the bed, and Giles watched him as he opened his eyes, stretched his arms with a groan, and blinked. "Hey," Xander said, his voice still soft with sleep. "What are you looking at?"

Giles smiled at him lovingly. "You." Xander flushed immediately, just as he always did, and it made Giles' smile widen. "I do so love watching you sleep."

"You should be at work. Shouldn't you?" Xander frowned, glancing at the clock on the nightstand.

"I should leave now, yes," Giles replied, standing only to sit on the edge of the bed. He reached out to cup Xander's warm cheek. "Will you join me for lunch?"

Xander leaned into his touch and smiled. "Yeah, I'd like that."

Giles wasn't surprised, considering the use they made of his office whenever Xander came for lunch. "I'll wait for you, then." He bent down and kissed Xander's lips, softly, a promise of more, just enough to wake Xander more fully. With a smile, Giles stood and picked up his jacket from the back of the chair. He left, glancing at Xander, who was now sitting up, his tongue darting across his lips to catch any lingering trace of Giles he could find, just before he closed the door.
